Schafer and Viegas make it two in a row
USA U20 Collegiate Champion, Cameron Schafer took an early lead on the bike leg and won the 4th and final leg of the Compendium Winter Multi-sport Triathlon in a time of 2hr 01,44sec at Suncoast yesterday. Top SA Duathlete, Bryce Viegas once again made short work of the Olympic duathlon race, claiming his well deserved first place spot ahead of a small but star studded duathlon field.

The cold wet weather held back and produced a calm and perfect race morning for the start of the final Compendium Multi-Series event on Suncoast beach. 225 eager competitors took to their starting lines for the final event in the 2009 Compendium Winter Multi-Series. With the sea conditions improving by the minute, the Rookie athletes headed out for a tough but manageable 200m surf swim in the warm sea. Jayde Perrins, Aaron Bigger and Cruz Barber managed to have a great swim and help off a strong challenge from Tyler O'Connor and chasing brother Jordan Perrins. Jayde Perrins hung onto his lead and crossed the finish line first in a time of 24min and 17sec. Aaron Bigger was second with Cruz Barber rounding off the top three. In the ladies race, Jade Hatting managed a great swim and run to clinch the ladies Rookie crown in a time of 26min 44sec. Sasha-lee Hordengen claimed a well deserved 2nd and Amber Adlam claimed 3rd place.

In the men's triathlon event, Henri Schoeman was first out of the water with a 3min gap and lead the bike and run until his hamstring packed in. This injury left it open for USA Collegiate U20 Champion Cameron Shafer to win his second title in two events, crossing the finish line in a time of 2hrs 01min 44sec. Hillcrest triathlete Carl Storm hung onto 3rd, battling it out with fellow athlete Dean Moore. However it was Storm who surged ahead on the final 5km run lap to secure his 2nd place victory and also claiming his spot at the top of the series points standings, winning him the 2009 Series title. Gauteng's Rianna De Lange raced her 3rd event in the series, and managed a great swim and bike to hold off a strong challenge from Natalie Beckenstrater and young La Lucia Athlete Tayla Glover. Rianna managed to win in a time of 2hrs 21min 25sec, clinching first place ahead of Natalie Beckenstrater and 3rd going to Tayla Glover.

The duathlon event was in hot contention, with one of Gauteng's top Duathletes, Bryce Viegas competing in his second event of the series, after winning last week's Afriman Duathlon in Gauteng. The Duathletes set off for their first 10km run, with Bryce taking and early lead, but being chased closely by Ironman Triathlete Nick Kingsley and top KZN duathlete Bertus Van Zyl. Onto the bike, the top 3 were within 1 min of each other, however once the duathletes hit the tar for their second run, Bryce opened up the run gap and managed to clinch the first place spot in a time of 1hr 57min 28sec. Nick Kingsley crossed the line a well deserved 2nd place with Bertus Van Zyl claiming 3rd place as well as the Duathlon Series Title.

A big thanks must be made to the Durban Metro Police for the road closures and keeping the athletes safe while out on the course. B-Active Sports would like to thank all the competitors who took part in the 2009 series and thanks them for their patience and support during the 2010 construction. Details for the 2010 series will be posted on our website shortly as there will be changes and improvements due to the 2010 Soccer World cup.
