Local brothers race to the wire in exciting Midlands Ultra Triathlon
Snday's Midlands Ultra Triathlon came down to the wire, with the local brothers Anton and Brad Storm racing neck and neck over the final 15km trail run section. The lead changed 4 times over the 15km trail run route which then left the battle for the finish tunnel. Brad Strom eventually clinched first place but by only half a meter on his younger brother Anton.

In the ladies race, JHB athletes Corrine Berg and Rianna De Langer exited the water ahead of the 2009 Midlands Ultra winner, Claire Horner. However Horner managed to power her way to the front on the bike leg to start the run route in first place. Dr Helen Buley from La Lucia had a strong bike, getting herself into a comfortable 2nd position on the bike before starting the 15km trail run leg. Horner managed to open up a good lead over her chasers and finished in a comfortable time of 3hrs 25min 13sec. Dr Helen Buley finished 3min back and Rianna De Langer claimed a well deserved 3rd place.

The men's race was lead out the water by up and coming triathlete Henri Schoeman. Unfortunately Schoeman pulled out of the bike leg with a puncture, which opened the lead to Brad and Anton Storm. Glen Gore was chasing hard, closely followed by a Tuks athlete Gerhard De Bruin. Brad Storm came off the bike first, 5seconds ahead of brother Anton, with Gerhard De Bruin only 1min10sec back. But it was the Storm brothers who fought it out over the run route, leaving Gerhard De Bruin to claim a well deserved 3rd place, with Glen Gore claiming 4th and Gilbert Quevauvilliers clinching the final 5th place podium slot.

In the Men's sprint event, Pinetown triathlete Johnny De Dominicis claimed an excellent run time, of 17min for the 5km trail run, which give him the victory and a 3 min lead ahead of chaser Ryan Redman. Redman finished in 2nd with 3rd place going to Darren Goddard. The Ladies Sprint race was also hotly contested, with rising star Lesley Wilson Jones clinching 1st place just ahead of Kerryn Grenfell, with Sally Brown claiming a well deserved 3rd place.

Midmar dam was the perfect setting for the 2010 Midlands Ultra Triathlon, with over 600 competitors entering and the numbers growing by 20% on 2009. "This is an exciting time say race Directors Damian and Lauren Bradley. Triathlon numbers are definitely on the increase and the level of competition is rising each year. We had a fantastic day of racing at Midlands Dam, which lends itself to an event like this. Midmar Dam is the best venue in South Africa to stage an event like this and we look forward to gaining momentum with this race, growing it into one of the biggest Dam venue triathlons in South Africa. We had fantastic support from the Howick Police and we thank all motorists that were affected during the race. Look out for the 2011 event, which will be bigger and better"
