Cold and wet conditions greeted over 200 athletes as they prepared for the final event in the 2008 Suncoast Winter Multisport Series. With R25 000 in prize money at stake, some of the top athletes in the country had come down to take part in this gruelling endurance event.

Bertus van Zyl took charge on the first 10km run section of the Duathlon and entered the transition 30sec ahead of the 2007 Series winner Darren Goddard to be first out onto the bike section. Darren having raced BMX nationals the day before was battling to find his legs and had to be content with his slower pace. In the triathlon race, Team swimmer John Ellis exited the swim first and handed over to his team mate for the 40km cycle route. The first individual out the water was Terrance Parkin, who managed to gain over 2mins on the second placed individual. Carl Storm, Claude Eksteen and Loy de Jager all exited the swim together and set off to chase down leader Terrance Parkin.

After 40km on a flat course, Terrance Parkin returned to the transition still 2min ahead of second placed rival, Claude Eksteen. Carl Storm came off the bike 3rd, with Loy De Jager and previous Olympic distance winner Bright Mamogale starting the run in 4th and 5th place.

In the Duathlon event Bertus van Zyl was off the bike and leading the last 5km run section over 2 min ahead of Darren Goddard. Yvette Roberts was off the Bike first and lead the way for the ladies duathlon event, closely chased by Tersia Nel. Bertus Van Zyl managed to hold off Darren and crossed the finish line in 2:04:58sec winning the men's Duathlon event and claiming his share of the R10 000 prize money. Darren claimed second and Gary Babich claiming 3rd.

Claude Eksteen managed to take the lead from Terrance Parkin after the first 4km of the run and was now steadily working on opening up his gap on 2nd and 3rd placed athletes. Carl Storm and Bright Mamogale were running neck and neck while trying to reel in the two men ahead. After the 6km mark Bright and Carl has moved into 2nd and 3rd place respectively, however they were claiming back no time from race leader Claude Eksteen.

Claude crossed the line first in a time of 1:59:09sec, with Bright Mamogale and Carl Storm claiming second and third respectively. In the ladies race, Wilma Daniels held off Alexia Loizou to claim her second win of the Series, with Angela Bott finishing 3rd place.

B-Active Sports race director Gavin Mcleod said "Even with the cold wet weather, it hadn't dampended the athletes racing. We had no major accidents, although we had lots of punctures from the weekend's festivities along the beachfront. However we are very excited to announce our new title sponsors for 2009, Compendium Insurance, who will be injecting some exciting changes into the Series, so look out for this series in 2009".
